Statement
As a painter I am focused on the material world that I live in, my surroundings and the people that inhabit it. I paint from life, en plein air and also from my own photo references, depicting the urban landscapes and places that I call home. I make portraits of those I know well, family and friends as well as anonymous characters who appear mysteriously throughout my world and suggest some type of narrative which I prefer to leave open for interpretation. The thread that runs through my subject matter is color. My paintings are as much about color, light and shadow as they are personal. I began as a studio painter at a very young age but then worked as an illustrator for many years - so now my work combines these modes of thinking with equal weight.
Edward Hopper and Bruce Springsteen have always been my artistic godfathers . When I settled in the beach town of Long Branch, New Jersey it felt as though I had stepped inside a movie art directed by the former and scored by the latter. I’ve recorded many of the disappearing buildings of this rapidly changing landscape in order to preserve their antique charm.
